Organize Pages

In Papermerge you can rotate, reorder, delete, extract, and move individual pages between documents — operations that are essential when working with scanned documents.

Scanned documents often have pages in the wrong orientation. To fix this:

  1. Select the page(s) to rotate
  2. Click the rotate button (clockwise or counter-clockwise)
  3. The page rotates 90 degrees

You can rotate multiple pages at once by selecting them first.

Pages can be rearranged within a document:

  1. In the thumbnail panel, drag a page thumbnail
  2. Drop it at the desired position
  3. Pages renumber automatically

This is useful when:

  • Scanned pages are out of order
  • You want to reorganize a document’s structure
  • Pages were inserted in the wrong position

To remove pages from a document:

  1. Select the page(s) to delete
  2. Click Delete or press the Delete key
  3. Confirm the deletion

Deleted pages are removed permanently from draft documents.

Extracting moves selected pages out of the current document and places them into a new document. To use this feature, open the secondary panel (see Dual Panel) and navigate to the folder where you want the new document to be placed.

  1. Select the pages you want to extract
  2. Drag and drop the selected pages into the secondary panel (into the target folder)

You will be asked whether all selected pages should become a single new document, or each selected page should become its own separate document. The original document keeps all non-extracted pages.

Use case: A multi-page scan contains many separate invoices. Extract each invoice’s pages to create a separate document for each one.

You can move pages from one document to another. To use this feature, open the secondary panel (see Dual Panel) and navigate to the target document — the one you want to move pages into. Then drag and drop pages from the source document’s thumbnail list into the target document’s thumbnail list.

Once you drop the pages, you will be asked to choose one of four strategies:

StrategyWhat happens
Amend insertPages are added to the current version of the target document alongside its existing pages. The version number stays the same.
Amend replacePages replace the existing pages in the current version of the target document. The version number stays the same.
Supersede insertA new version of the target document is created, containing both the existing pages and the moved pages. The version number increments.
Supersede replaceA new version of the target document is created, containing only the moved pages — entirely replacing the previous content. The version number increments.

Use amend strategies when you are still assembling the document and do not need to preserve its previous state. Use supersede strategies when the target document has already been reviewed or shared and you want to keep a record of what it looked like before the change.
